The questions a data-driven board should be asking
Plenty of boards have a data strategy, a stack of dashboards and a nagging feeling that none of it is really changing how they decide. If that sounds familiar, the fastest diagnostic is not an audit. It is a handful of honest questions asked around the table.
Five questions worth asking
- Which of our decisions are genuinely made on evidence — and which just have a chart next to them?
- When the data says something we don't like, what actually happens?
- Who owns our most important definitions, and could they answer if we asked right now?
- How much of our reporting would we miss if it disappeared tomorrow?
- When did a number last change a decision in this room?
The value is in the discomfort. Most leadership teams can answer the first question for one or two decisions and go quiet on the rest. That silence is the map of where the real work lies.
From questions to focus
These questions do something a maturity assessment rarely does: they point at behaviour rather than technology. They reveal whether data is shaping decisions or merely decorating them — and that distinction is where data-driven working is won or lost.
You do not need a consultant to ask them. You may want one to help act on the answers — but the questions themselves are free, and asking them honestly is the most useful hour a board can spend on its data.
